I looked at the construction of dreams, what types of dreams there are, and how the subconscious mind works to create the dreams. But I really need to focus on the link. Dreams mean you can end up in a desert, and you could be eating cake, but what if the next link was you are in Paris – how did you get from the desert to Paris; dreams jump, but they often do so in linear, clear way.
So, for example, I would have to put in a link – I got to Paris by train, car, boat etc.
Rather than just using everyday source objects should I use a combination of symbolic meanings? Or should I look to tell a story = different structure for a storyboard.
How can things like colour be presented for everyday items, when everyone has a different day.
Could I create a dream, with symbolic value:
For example, you dream of a green dog.
Dog could symbolise loyalty (why would that be appearing in the dream?)
Green symbolises good health, as an example.
But if it was a blue dog.
Dog represents loyalty.
Blue can represent wisdom.
So you can have a healthy dog, or a clever dog.
Why would you have this? How would it relate to the rest of the dream?
I think in this circumstance, a more linear storyboard would be appropriate, rather than a very complex looping structure.
Dreams can be random, yes, but they usually have some kind of logic behind them. Currently my idea is very chopped up.
You land on purple and you connect to thunder, rat or a song from the radio – which is completely random – do we actually dream like this?
Also, if everything is looped, it will have to make sense when it links from the other subjects.
For example, purple can be reached by linking from a cinema synopsis, another colour, or a tiger.
So it could be possible to dream of a purple tiger, but you couldn't really dream of a purple yellow.
Furthermore, with things like music and film it all depends on tastes – not everybody likes the same thing, so people may have a dream about one thing where for other people it would be their worst nightmare! I also need to take into account cultures and realise that lots of people come from different cultures.
I suppose I could make it more personal, keep a dream diary. But I like the idea of the reader using the 'dream machine' to create their dreams.
Also I need to take into account that every body has a different day, so the source material on where the dream came from may not actually work, because the user may not have seen/heard/used etc whatever has been put in to reflect the subject. Also if I did use sources I would need to think how to link them.
I could look at common dream themes which would ensure that there might be some link for the readers, in the sense that, although they may not have the exact same dreams, they have had a dream following the same theme.
For example, a common dream theme is a dream of flying. Then I could look at things that make cause the reader to dream in the first place – linking back to the idea of sources our conscious mind stores.
Currently, I'm thinking it will probably be a lot easier to carry on with the fairy tale route, as I have potential concepts for layout and the structure is much easier to follow; I have a clear idea of where it is going etc but I think the dream idea will be a lot more interesting.
I think I will focus on the fairy tales, and come back to the dream, depending on time etc!
For the fairy tales I need to consider other fairy tales. It won't matter if the stories are not all well known – as they are all sourced from Grimm's Fairy Tales.
I need to ensure that the story is in first person format – YOU are the prince.
I also need to think of a wider range of dead ends, other than death, if possible.
i.e. killed by wolf, killed by 3 bears, turned into a frog, hurt leg had to return to castle, head chopped off etc - can there be any other dead ends? Could the prince get stuck, lost etc.
I need to work out the fairy tales I am going to use and how I will incorporate them into the story.
All the positive outcomes need to find a princess of some kind, i.e. Rupunzel, Sleeping Beauty etc.
Will the Prince meet characters on the way and how will this affect the rest of the outcome.
For example, does the Prince find the Golden Goose, does he get stuck to it, or does he keep on going? If he gets stuck does he keep going, trying to get someone to help him etc?
I think with fairy tales it will be easier to incorporate words as I will be writing actual passages for the story, whereas the dreams could be very limited. And this is a word project.
