After talking to Sam and being told that the 'o' sounds were meant to be read as prominent sounds I reread the poem and automatically thought about how these two lines:-
I waved my wings, and watched them
shrink below, their mouths open
would work. 'Their mouths open' suggest being shocked, so I decided to think about how I could represent this. Well, when you are shocked, your mouth does fall open, o-shaped. So my initial idea was to expand an 'o' as if shocked whilst everything else in the stanza flies on past - representing as the creature continues to fly, his 'brothers' become more and more shocked.
